Why pseudonyms beat black bars for AI

Asterisks remove information. Consistent pseudonyms preserve relationships so models can still summarize obligations, deadlines, and risks without seeing real identities. If every party becomes ****, the model cannot tell who owes whom.

What to anonymize in a commercial agreement

  • Legal names of parties, signatories, and notice contacts
  • Emails, phones, and physical notice addresses
  • Government IDs and payment instruments if present
  • Matter or case identifiers that deanonymize the deal
  • Sometimes exact dollar figures (policy-dependent) — toggle them off in review if you need quantum preserved
